What we get asked every season
Product
How many chestnuts are there in a kilo?
It depends on the calibre. Our fresh seasonal chestnut is calibre 60-80, i.e. between 60 and 80 pieces per kilo. The Grand Calibre has 45 to 55 pieces per kilo: big chestnuts, the kind roasted on the street. For an afternoon snack for four, half a kilo of large chestnuts is more than enough.
How do I store fresh chestnuts at home?
Take them out of the box as soon as they arrive. Best is a cool, dry, airy place (a pantry, a basket on the balcony if it is not freezing) or the fridge drawer inside a paper or cloth bag. Never in a sealed plastic bag: they sweat and go mouldy. Stored like that they keep for one to two weeks. To keep them longer, peel and freeze them.
Some of my chestnuts have worms. Is that normal?
A little, yes. Untreated Galician chestnuts live alongside the chestnut moth and weevil, and no grading catches 100% of affected pieces. We do three things to reduce it: we grade by hand and discard the worm-damaged ones, we cure in cold water (damaged chestnuts float and are removed) and, if despite that more than 5% of your order arrives in poor condition, we replace or refund it. Write to us with photos within 24 hours of receiving it.
What is the difference between the seasonal chestnut and the Grand Calibre?
Variety and size. The seasonal one blends Longal, Garrida and Parede in calibre 60-80: ideal for boiling, for purée or for roasting at home. The Grand Calibre is a selection of Longal and Amarelante at 45-55 pieces per kilo, water-cured for 7 days: it is what professional roasters use because the skin comes off on its own when roasted. Only 8% of the harvest reaches that size.
Do you use any treatments or preservatives?
No. No post-harvest fungicides, no waxes, no gas. Just curing in cold water or a ventilated chamber, which is what homes with chestnut trees have always done. That is why we ask you to eat them within one to two weeks.
Do they contain allergens?
Chestnuts are not among the 14 allergens that must be declared in the EU, but walnuts are tree nuts. We handle both products in the same facilities, so we cannot rule out traces. Honey is not suitable for children under one year old. Chestnut flour is gluten-free.
Shipping
Where do you ship and how much does it cost?
To mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and mainland Portugal. In mainland Spain shipping costs €4.95 and is free from €45.00. All rates and delivery times are on the shipping & returns page. Not yet to the Canary Islands, Ceuta or Melilla, because of customs. Rest of Europe: coming soon.
When does my order leave?
If you order before 12:00 Monday to Thursday, it leaves the same day. Fresh chestnuts do not travel on Thursday afternoons or Fridays so they never spend the weekend in a depot: those orders leave on Monday. Pantry products and tools leave Monday to Friday. We email you the tracking.
How long does it take to arrive?
1-3 working days in mainland Spain, 2-4 in the Balearic Islands and 2-4 in Portugal, from dispatch. We ship in ventilated boxes and the chestnuts handle the journey without any trouble.
What do I do if the parcel arrives damaged?
Take photos of the parcel and the contents and write to us by WhatsApp or email within 24 hours with your order number. We replace the product in the next shipment or refund the affected part, whichever you prefer. You do not need to send anything back.
Can I return an order?
Fresh chestnuts and packs containing them are perishable, so the law does not provide for returns because of a change of mind (only for quality problems, which we always resolve). Tools and unopened pantry products, yes: you have 14 days from delivery. Details on the shipping & returns page.
Orders & payment
What is a pre-order and when do I receive it?
Before the season you can pre-order fresh chestnuts from the coming harvest. We charge at the time of booking and ship in booking order from the estimated date shown on the product page (for the seasonal chestnut, from 28 September). If the harvest is a few days early or late, we let you know by email. You can cancel and get your money back if the delay is more than 15 days.
How can I pay?
By credit or debit card, including Apple Pay and Google Pay, via Stripe's secure payment gateway. We never see or store your card details.
Can you invoice my company?
Of course. Enter the company name and tax ID at checkout, or write to us afterwards with the order number and we'll email you the invoice. For recurring orders we have trade terms and prices excluding VAT on the wholesale page.
Can I change the address or cancel an order?
As long as the order has not left, yes: write to us as soon as possible with the order number. Once it is with the courier, we can no longer change it.
Do you do gifts or personalised boxes?
Yes. The Season Selection includes a card you can personalise at checkout. If you need several gift boxes (companies, weddings), write to us and we will prepare a quote.
Wholesale
Do you sell to restaurants, shops and street roasters?
Yes, it is an important part of what we do. From 50 kg a week we offer a price per kilo excluding VAT, guaranteed calibre, weekly deliveries and invoicing. All the information and the form are on the wholesale page.
What is the minimum trade order?
50 kg per delivery. Below that it is cheaper to buy in the shop: the 10 kg size is already very keenly priced.
Question not here?
Write to us and we will reply within 1-2 working days. In season, WhatsApp is usually same-day.
