Season · November to March

Grelos come when the cold does: November to March, not before.

Grelo is the tender shoot of the turnip before it flowers, and it is only good once it has frosted: the frost takes the bitterness out. Which is why there are no grelos here in August, however often they are asked for. We bring them from the Terra Chá, in Lugo, tied in bunches and cut that same morning. Our grove grows chestnuts, not greens; these belong to somebody else. For caldo, for lacón, for empanada.

What matters

  • November to March, after the first frosts
  • Tied bunch, cut on the day it ships
  • Not from our patch: we buy it in the Terra Chá (Lugo)

How to store it

Picked and shipped unwashed: the soil is what protects it. Wash it just before cooking, never before storing. Leaves go in the fridge drawer in a paper bag or wrapped in a damp cloth, and keep 3 to 5 days. Potatoes and onions are the opposite: out of the fridge, somewhere cool, dry and dark — and never together, because onions make potatoes sprout.

Shipping & returns

We ship to mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands and Portugal. Free from €45.00. Fresh products travel in ventilated boxes and leave Monday to Thursday so they never sit in a warehouse over the weekend.

Fresh chestnuts and the packs that include them are perishable goods: by law (art. 16(d) of EU Directive 2011/83, art. 103(d) of the Spanish Consumer Act) the right of withdrawal doesn't apply. If they arrive in poor condition, send us a photo within 24 hours and we'll replace them or refund you.
